A news article caught my eye earlier today, it seems it's the 30th Birthday of the IKEA Billy bookcase. I purchased my first three for about $70 each in the As-Is room at my local IKEA store in 1980. A few months prior, I had moved back home, after living and working in Florida for a few years. My parents offered me the use of the bedroom next to mine as a study/sitting room. An inexpensive couch, a flokati rug from a yard sale, various odds and ends and three very large black Billy bookcases later and I had a very comfy room to relax in. With the exception of my move to England a few years later, the Billy bookcases were manhandled and wangled into and out of the various places I rented, then to the first home I owned, and then finally to my current home. Btw it is easier to move them built vs. taking them apart. The black towers, which my sister likened to the vast tower from 2001: A Space Odyssey, had been transformed with a coat or three of cream paint, in 2004, and placed in my bedroom, however, I was never quite happy, they seemed to loom over me at night. Last winter I finally figured out where they would be best placed. With a bottle of vodka and a few sisterly sighs, I was able to finagle my brother into helping me 'build-in" the Billy bookcases. Here is the final result. I'm very pleased with the project so I thought I would share it. The only thing I would change would be to take the unit to the ceiling. Due to too many books, I have had to use the top of the unit for books. It would also serve to display pottery, pictures etc.
